A blast full of colours, immersive images and sensuous dreamscapes. The first major presentation Pipilotti Rist.

When visiting Denmark, I would very much recommend making a stop at Louisiana, the modern art museum. It is located in Humlebæk, around 50 minutes from Copenhagen. Besides the great art collection, the architecture of this place will win you over. It has open corridors, nature all around, and a beautiful view of the ocean.
M Y V I S I T
I first visited the section where they presented a temporary exhibition called “Open my Glade” by Pipilotti Rist. A Swiss artist born in 1962. The expo was especially ‘created for Louisiana with the close collaboration of the artist, showing her early work in the TV format, a large spatial video, and various audio installations’. To be honest, I hadn’t heard of her before and I didn’t really read about the artist before visiting the museum, so the content was a complete surprise to me, a very good one actually.
T H E E X P E R I E N C E
The first video I saw, “Color is Dangerous” from 1997, showed a happy woman wearing a blue dress smashing windows of cars parked in the street with a big plastic/metal flower. The video is in slow motion and the screen is divided showing also a field with flowers simultaneously. The idea of this video arose as a ‘response to a chief editor, who wouldn’t let her do the things she wished to do, even though he had given her a carte blanche’. She then turned her anger around and used it as a catharsis.

My favorite part was a big room full of beds where you could lay down and watch a projection shown in the ceiling (4th Floor To Mildness, 2016). After a few seconds, I realized the perspective shown was like being at the bottom of a pond looking at the surface. I could have stayed there for a long time with this nice sensation of being underwater, immerse in the music playing in the background.
And of course, I cannot describe the exhibition, without mentioning her approach to the female body, which is very present in her discourse. Some of her videos are subtle, showing her body while she is in the water, and others not so much, like “Butclip” from 1993 which portrays menstruation and then a video of a woman giving birth. But still, she plays with video formats adding a psychedelic touch.
T H E F E E L I N G S L E F T
The whole exhibition made me feel playful and dreamy. The videos and installations gave me the feeling of being invited into her thoughts, a sneak peek inside her mind throughout these colorful images. As I walked from one room to another, I kept wondering what is her creation process.
One week after seeing the exhibition, I watched some of her interviews online and discovered she is quite playful and very energetic. It’s nice to encounter these exhibitions were the art stands by itself through sensations, but it also kind of creates an intimate relationship with the artist.
T H E P E R M A N E N T C O L L E C T I O N
As part of the permanent collection, you can find Yayoi Kusama’s installation “Gleaming Lights of the Souls”. Besides being the perfect spot to get your Instagram likes going on (if you are that type of millennial), the experience is very unique. The small room is full of mirrors and bulbs changing colors, suddenly boundaries don’t exist and one ends up being part of this ethereal space.

Si visitan Dinamarca, recomiendo hacer una parada en “Louisiana”, el museo de arte moderno. Se encuentra en Humlebæk, a unos 50 minutos de Copenhague. Visité primero la sección donde presentan la exposición temporal llamada “Open my Glade” de Pipilotti Rist. Artista suiza nacida en 1962. La exposición fue especialmente ‘creada para Louisiana con la estrecha colaboración de la artista, mostrando sus primeros trabajos en formato de TV, luego un gran video espacial y varias instalaciones de audi’. Para ser honesta, no había oído hablar de ella antes y realmente no leí sobre el artista antes de visitar el museo, por lo que el contenido fue una completa sorpresa para mí, una muy buena sorpresa.

El primer video que vi, “Color is Dangerous” de 1997, mostraba a una mujer feliz con un vestido azul rompiendo ventanas de autos estacionados en la calle con una gran flor de plástico / metal. El video está en cámara lenta y la pantalla está dividida mostrando también un campo de flores simultáneamente. La idea de este video surgió como una ‘respuesta a un editor jefe, que no le permitiría hacer las cosas que deseaba, a pesar de que él le había dado una carta blanca’. Luego volvió su ira y lo usó como catarsis.

Mi parte favorita era una habitación grande con camas llenas, en la que podría acostarse y ver una proyección que se muestra en el techo (4th Floor To Mildness, 2016). Después de unos segundos, me di cuenta de que la perspectiva mostrada era como estar en el fondo de un estanque mirando la superficie. Podría haberme quedado allí por mucho tiempo, pero había gente esperando para tomar un lugar en las camas. Pero podría haberme quedado mucho tiempo con esta agradable sensación de estar bajo el agua, inmersa con la música de fondo.
Y, por supuesto, no puedo describir la exposición, sin mencionar su acercamiento al cuerpo femenino, que está muy presente en su discurso. Algunos de sus videos son sutiles, mostrando su cuerpo mientras está en el agua, y otros no tanto, como “Butclip” de 1993 , que retrata la menstruación y luego un video de una mujer dando a luz. Pero aún así, ella juega con formatos de video agregando un toque psicodélico.
L O S S E N T I M I E N T O S
Toda la exposición me hizo sentir juguetón y soñador. Los videos y las instalaciones me dieron la sensación de ser invitada a sus pensamientos, solo echar un vistazo dentro de su mente a través de estas coloridas imágenes. Mientras caminaba de una habitación a otra, me preguntaba cuál es su proceso de creación.
Una semana después de ver la exposición, vi algunas de sus entrevistas en línea y descubrí que es muy juguetona y muy enérgica. Es agradable encontrar estas exposiciones donde el arte se destaca por sí mismo a través de las sensaciones, pero también crea una relación íntima con el artista.
L A C O L L E C I Ó N P E R M A N T E
Como parte de la colección permanente, puede encontrar la instalación de Yayoi Kusama “Luces resplandecientes de las almas”. Además de ser el lugar perfecto para que tus Instagram disfruten (si eres ese tipo de milenial), la experiencia es única. La pequeña habitación está llena de espejos y bulbos que cambian de color, de repente no existen límites y uno termina siendo parte de este espacio etéreo.
