Existential dilemmas of the modern era, her personal experience, cultural and political movements mixed with loss of ties and the continuity with their own individual and collective past. Sometimes pressure exerted by a foreign environment, language, a system of values that she was out to conform or assimilate as an individual. Then there is the separation and reconciliation of making a type of art that has repercussions on the public of all ages , all origins.
Topics of memory, history, culture, ritual and time recurrently appear in her work in the form of sculpture, Land art, performance and feminist art. She has always expressed the limits, defining the artistic disciplines, the geographic borders, the politics of sex and culture. She was a force to be reckoned with:

Since Ana was very young she had already acquired a very particular aesthetic that very few artists could achive and hope for.
Nature occupies a preponderant place in Mendieta’s work. The relationship of earth and body “earth-body art” based on the four primordial elements: earth, water, air and fire helps lead a personal and singular interpretation of her work that could be clasified as the multidisciplinary visual arts that emerge in the course of the years 1970-1980.
Later, she used blood as a key element in her work, taking what was inside and bringing it to the outside, a surprising psychological study of autonomy and vulnerability.

Mendieta was born in Havana Cuba in 1948, in 1961 her sister and she took refuge in the United States during the operation “Peter Pan” (an operation designed to take 14,000 children from their Cuban parents who feared the communist ideology), the Artist subsequently becomes American.
Her first “Silhouette” Magnus opus is the fusing of body and earth, a piece made in the archaeological zone of Yagul in Mexico.
During the 70’s Mendieta goes back almost every summer to Mexico where she creates a significant number of her most important pieces. At the end of the 70s, she became a member of the Gallery A.I.R. The first cooperative gallery that united only women artists in the United States that aimed to providea permanent and professional space for them.
In 1980 she returned to Cuba for the first time, where she created her art which consisted of rock pieces and which reconnected with her native country. In 1985, Mendieta married the artist Carl André and in this year the artist met her death; Surrounded in controversy, falling from the window of the 34th floor of her apartment in New York.

Jue de Paume offers the largest ensemble of her works ever presented together. Devoted mainly to her filmic works , being perhaps, the least known of her Cuban projects, with 104 films that Mendieta made during 1971 to 1981. If she documented her performances it was because they are also considered in their entirety works of art . The exhibition offers us 20 of her films 6 of them restored and unpublished and more than 30 photographs intercalating the conventional codes between different artistic practices.

Dilemas existenciales de una época moderna: la experiencia de movimientos personales, culturales y políticos; la pérdida de lazos, la continuidad con su propio pasado individual y colectivo; las presiones ejercidas por un medio ambiente, un lenguaje o un sistema de valores extranjeros, para conformarse o para asimilarse como individuo. Separación y reconciliación del ser mediante una obra que tiene repercusión sobre el público de todas las edades todos los orígenes.
Temas de la memoria, la historia, la cultura, el ritual y el paso del tiempo aparecen de una forma recurrente en su obra, escultura, Land art, el performance y el arte feminista. Ella simpre sincerando los límites, definiendo las disciplinas artísticas, las fronteras geográficas, políticas de sexo y de cultura.

La naturaleza ocupa un lugar preponderante dentro del trabajo de Mendieta. En su relación del cuerpo tierra “earth-body art” utiliza los cuatro elementos primordiales: la tierra, el agua, el aire y el fuego; esto ayuda a desembocar una interpretación personal y singular hacia las artes visuales multidisciplinarias que emerge en el transcurso de los años 1970-1980.
Posteriormente ella utilizara la sangre como elemento clave de su obra, tomar lo de adentro y ponerlo por fuera un sorprendente estudio psicológico de la autonomía y de la vulnerabilidad.

Mendieta nace en la Habana Cuba en 1948, en el 1961 su hermana y ella se refugian en los Estados Unidos durante la operación “Peter Pan” (una operación diseñada para llevarse a 14,000 niños de padres cubanos quienes temían a la ideología comunista), la artista posteriormente se naturaliza americana.
Su primera “Silueta” Magnus opus de Mendieta fusionando cuerpo y tierra, es realizada en la zona arqueológica de Yagul, México.
Durante los años 70´s Mendieta va casi cada verano a México donde crea un número importante de sus piezas. A finales de los años 70s ella es miembro de la Galería A.I.R primera galería cooperativa de mujeres artistas en los Estados Unidos, con el objetivo de proporcionar un espacio de exposición profesional y permanente a mujeres artistas.
En 1980 regresa por primera vez a Cuba donde crea sus piezas rupestres así reconecta con su país natal, en 1985 Mendieta se une en matrimonio con el artista Carl André y es este año donde la artista se encuentra con su muerte; envuelta de controversia, cayendo de la ventana del piso 34 de su apartamento en Nueva york.

Jue de Paume presenta el más grande ensamble de sus obras jamás reunidas, consagrada en particular a sus obras fílmicas siendo, quizá, lo menos conocido de la artista cubana, con 104 películas que Mendieta realizó durante 1971 al 1981. Si ella documentaba sus performances estos son igualmente considerados como obras de arte enteramente, la exposición nos ofrece 20 de sus películas 6 de ellas restauradas e inéditas y más de 30 fotografías Intercalando los códigos convencionales entre diferentes prácticas artísticas.
