Contemporary and sometimes compared to Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar was an artist of the seventies in the cosmopolitan capital of New York, but this exhibition shows us why it should be remembered.

Hujar’s photographs make me think of what a boy or girl, the “artist” of a group of friends, would make. The one who always has his camera hanging around his neck in case any cliché is revealed before his eyes, resulting in documenting the daily life of a group of friends, young and anxious who roam the lights of the night city.

PICTURES
The palette of his photographs are not monochromatic, there are slight sepia tones that make his portraits somewhat intimate. He photographs his friends, his acquaintances but also to people who “venture to the extreme” who “claim the freedom to be themselves” and who were not necessarily known.

Although his portraits were perched, he feels a spontaneity in the pose of his subjects and makes him feel comfortable to free himself and take out his personal style.

Unlike Mapplethorpe who wanted to make his naked idealized, almost sculptural bodies, Hujar prefers the bodies that have survived. Scars, birthmarks, contorted bodies and sexual fetishes. He makes you want to touch the image.

A selection of visuals of the exhibition will also be exhibited at the Gare de Lyon train station at the 12ème arrondissement de Paris during this exhibition.
Also, the last Tuesday of each month, Jeu de Paume proposes the “Mardis Jeunes” giving free admission to students and children under 25 years!

In its upper gallery, Jeu de Paume dedicates an exhibition to the contemporary Algerian artist Zineb Sedira. His work includes photography, video, installations in relation to the history and restoration of Algerian memory.
In one of them he recreates an experimental film based on negatives of photographs found in forgotten suitcases.

Las fotografías de Hujar me hacen pensar a las que haría el chico o chica “artista” de un grupo de amigos. El que siempre lleva su cámara colgando del cuello por si algún cliché se revela ante sus ojos, el que documenta la cotidianidad de un grupo de amigos, jóvenes y ansiosos que vagan por las luces de la ciudad nocturna.

RETRATOS
La paleta de sus fotografías no son monocromáticas, hay ligeros tonos sepia que hacen de sus retratos algo íntimo. Hujar fotografío a sus amigos, sus conocidos pero igualmente a personas que para él “se aventuran al extremo” que “reivindican la libertad de ser ellos mismos” y que no necesariamente eran conocidos.

Aunque sus retratos fueran posados, se siente una espontaneidad en la pose de sus sujetos y logra que éste se sienta cómodo.a para liberarse y sacar su estilo personal.

CUERPOS
A diferencia de Mapplethorpe quien quería hacer de sus desnudos cuerpos idealizados, casi escultóricos, Hujar prefiere los cuerpos que han sobrevivido. Cicatrices, marcas de nacimiento, cuerpos contorsionados y fetiches sexuales dejan ganas de tocar la imagen.

GARE DE LYON y “MARDIS JEUNES”
Una selección de visuales de la exposición serán igualmente exhibidos en la estación de trenes de Gare de Lyon en el 12ème arrondissement de Paris durante la estancia de la exposición.
Así mismo, el último marte de cada mes, el Jeu de Paume propone los “Mardis Jeunes” dando la entrada gratuita a estudiantes y menores de 25 años!

ZINEB SEDIRA
En su galería superior, el Jeu de Paume dedica una exposición a la artista contemporánea de origen argelino Zineb Sedira. Su obra incluye fotografía, video, instalaciones en relación a la historia y restauración de la memoria argelina.
En una de ellas recrea una película experimental a base de negativos de fotografías encontradas en maletas olvidadas.
