The Eye Filmmuseum presented the exhibition Jan Švankmajer – The Alchemical Wedding devoted to the work of Czech surrealist and master animator. This was the first major retrospective of his bizarre and dark films and sculptures in the Netherlands.
Also on show in the exhibition are a large selection of his tactile objects, collages, prints and sick maps. At Eye Švankmajer’s films where screened and various talks and events will where hosted.

At the beginning of the exhibition already I knew I was about to enter a dark, heavy but sarcastic and incredible world. To be honest I knew little about Švankmajer. What I knew about him was that he had the power to make anything come to life on the screen and I have spent many hours looking at his short films, mesmerized by the use of colours, the choice of objects (some he created himself) and the social connotations behind them.
I don’t mind the obscene, the morbid, the dark and unwanted things. I believe they make a part of the art world. They bring the mind to wonder in places beyond what we consider beautiful a relate to the broken and ill.
The exhibition was concluded on March 3 but the short films and films by Jan Švankmajer can be found online.

El Eye Filmmuseum presentó la exposición Jan Švankmajer – Una retrospectiva alquímica dedicada al trabajo de Checo surrealista y maestro animador. Esta fue la primera gran retrospectiva de sus extrañas y oscuras películas y esculturas en los Países Bajos.
También en la exposición se muestra una gran selección de sus objetos táctiles, collages, grabados y mapas enfermos. En Eye se proyectaron películas de Švankmajer y se organizaron vario charlas y eventos.

La exposición en Eye presenta una gran instalación en la que se proyectan numerosos cortometrajes de Švankmajer en medio de notables esculturas e imágenes animadas, junto con Tres Wunderkammers llenos de collages, objetos táctiles, mapas enfermos y dibujos “medianos”.

Al comienzo de la exposición ya sabía que estaba a punto de entrar en un mundo oscuro, pesado pero sarcástico e increíble. Para ser honesta, sabía poco acerca de Švankmajer. Lo que sabía de él era que tenía el poder de hacer que cualquier cosa cobrara vida en la pantalla. He pasado muchas horas mirando sus cortometrajes, hipnotizada por el uso de colores, la elección de objetos (algunos de los cuales él mismo creó), sumergida en las connotaciones sociales que hay detrás de ellos.
No me importa lo obsceno, lo morboso, lo oscuro o lo indeseado. Creo que forman parte del mundo del arte. Hacen que la mente se pierda en lugares más allá de lo que consideramos hermoso y lo relaciona con los quebrantados y enfermos que son parte de nuestra e inspiración diaria. Luchar contra ello solo les da mas poder, aceptarlos le da más belleza a nuestras vidas.
La exposición fue concluida el 3 de marzo pero los cortometrajes y peliculas de Jan Švankmajer se pueden encontre en línea.
