I must acknowledge , I demand a lot from Barcelona. She does not even know it, but every time I visit her, my expectations regarding art exhibitions are high. This could sound somewhat harsh on my part but thinking about it, this is the sixth time I have set foot in this city, and each time I had coincided with an extensive choice of art exhibitions. She is like that. Big because of her cultural activities. The last one I saw here touched me. It was “On the Table” by Ai Wei Wei in La Virreina Center de la Image … a complete experience.
On this occasion, I arrived on the inauguration day of; nothing more and nothing less than the film retrospective of one of the greatest film directors in the world: Stanley Kubrick, at the Contemporary Cultural Center of Barcelona (CCCB).
This exhibition is installed almost 2 years after it was presented at the Mexico City National Cinematic which received more than 160 visitors. The world tour has been exemplary since it has also visited Los Angeles, Paris and Seoul.
Barcelona is the new headquarters that houses it today. More than 900 objects related to Kubrick, among original props from his films, images, documents, photographic equipment, costumes and more, which are distributed among different areas. They cover the life and work of Stanley Kubrick, from his first steps as a photographer for Look magazine, through each of his feature films in chronological order including the film projects that remained on the table upon his death in 1999.
If I could define it with colours, the experience is intense red with shades of grey to black. The staging is perfectly well cared for even the simplest and most invisible detail is perfect. The objects transport the viewer into his “films” as a journey, as if he had been in the actual filming. Every room refering to each of his films, had the perfect scenery complemented with its own atmosphere and soundtrack, costumes, techniques and special effects. The most impressive for me is without a doubt, 2001: Space Odyssey which had a detailed explanation of how the futuristic stages were constructed, the brands that “sponsored” the film, the logistics and the imagination of the Artistic Director. Without a doubt a real work of genius.
For 4 and a half hours I was immersed in the Kubrickian world. It was hard for me to leave and return to
reality because I constantly believed that I was part of a film scenario. As I exited the exhibit everything I saw and perceived in the streets of Barcelona felt like a movie and this reminded me of one of Kubrick’s most famous phrases “If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed. “ The sky is the limit.

La retrospectiva del director neoyorquino nos dejó con la boca abierta y un hueso en la mano.
Lo tengo que aceptar, a Barcelona yo le exigo mucho, muy probablemente ella ni lo sabe, pero cada vez que la visito, mis expectativas en materia de exposiciones de arte es alta. Esto resulta un tanto rígido de mi parte, pero es que haciendo memoria, en las seis veces que he puesto el pie en ésta ciudad, me ha tocado coincidir con una cartelera fuerte. Es más bien que ella es asi, una grande en su programación cultural. La ultima que me había tocado fue “On the Table” de Ai Wei Wei en La Virreina Centre de la Imatge… toda una experiencia.
Y para esta ocasión, el día en que llegué se inauguró nada más y nada menos la retrospectiva fílmica de uno de los MÁS grandes directores de cine en el mundo: Stanley Kubrick, en el Centro Cultural Contemporáneo de Barcelona (CCCB).
Dicha exposición se instala a casi 2 años después de su estancia en la Cineteca Nacional de la Ciudad de México, la cual recibió a más de 160 visitantes. Pero su tour por el mundo ha sido ejemplar puesto que ha visitado igualmente Los Angeles, París y Seúl.
Barcelona es la nueva sede que acoge más de 900 objetos relacionados con Kubrick, entre utileria original de las películas, imágenes, documentos, equipo fotográfico, vestuario y más, los cuales se reparten entre diversos núcleos, mismos que abarcan la vida y obra de Stanley Kubrick, desde sus primeros pasos como fotógrafo para la revista Look, pasando por cada uno de sus largometrajes en orden cronológico y se incluyen también, los proyectos fílmicos que quedaron sobre la mesa a su muerte en 1999.
Si pudiera definirla con colores, la experiencia resulta roja intensa con matices de gris hasta negro. La puesta en escena está perfectamente bien cuidada hasta el más simple e invisible detalle. Los objetos transportan al espectador en un viaje fílmico como si hubiera estado en el rodaje; cada sala, la cual hace referencia a cada una de sus películas, tenía la escenografía perfecta, el ambiente y banda sonora, los vestuarios, las técnicas y efectos especiales. Las más impresionante es sin duda, 2001: Odisea en el espacio con una explicación minuciosa de cómo fue construido los escenarios futuristas, el vestuario, las marcas que “patrocinaron” el filme, la logística e imaginario del Director Artístico, sin duda un verdadero trabajo de genio.
Durante 4 horas y media estuve inmersa en el mundo kubrickiano. Me costó trabajo salir y volver a una realidad a la que constantemente pensaba e imaginaba un escenario fílmico de todo lo que veía y percibía en las calles de Barcelona, y bien recordé una de las más famosas frases de Kubrick “If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed”. El límite es el cielo.
